The Anti-Placebo Effect? In my last web paper I struggled with the idea that Melatonin is supposed to make people sleepy. If anything I became more restless. Well, what is that all about? So, in this paper, I decided that I wanted to find out, what that was "about". If you pull it apart, you can tell that it has something to do with the preconceived ideas that we have running around in our heads. So then, I thought, well, that is the placebo effect right? If you think that something, such as a drug or supplement, is supposed to perform a certain way, then even if it is nothing more than a sugar pill some people will have a larger tendency to play out that reaction. This is not a conscious choice. From the little neurobiology background I have, I would venture a guess to say that the preconceived notion of what is supposed to happen acts a triggering signal that would create an change in the membrane permeability of the neuron. And that would in turn cause an action potential and be the beginning of some sort of effect. So to dissect it with my previous example, if we were, theoretically, under the assumption that these Melatonin supplements truly had no effect. The population at large would, through the media and other advertising schemes, be made to believe that this drug supplement would induce sleep. Therefore that notion would lead to changes in the nervous system that were brought about by these beliefs causing a placebo effect. But the heart of my question here is that does this idea work in the other direction? My hypothesis previous to my beginning my research was yes. Not only because the Melatonin did not work for me and family, but because of what we have been discussing in class. My Philosophy of Life

My philosophy of life Is quite simple. When I was younger, I would always be more focused on the things that people had. I would look at my other cousins, and since the parents had better jobs than my mom, they would have nicer clothes, or the newest v died games before I did all the time. This would make me feel really self conscious through hoot my childhood, not necessarily because I was worried about not getting as much as they would. When I turned 16 and goat Job, I had decided that I was going to save all my money, and eventually get all the nice things that my cousins had.It was at this same time to o, that I had started to fall In love with the Idea of going to concerts, and finding new music to listen to. I would be spending all my money on concerts, and would never have anything concur et to tangibly have with my money, and my cousins would still have all these nice possess ones they could hold onto. I had the experiences that they didn't, but they were Just embedded in my mind, and they could physically touch and use theirs, it didn't seem fair. When I had decided to move to Florida to visit my step dad for a few months before moving to Boston to go to Emerson College, that was when my perspective changed. Ever drove or walked pass a homeless shelter and wondered how so many people got there? According to the American Aid Foundation, â€Å"Seven out of 10 Americans are one paycheck away from being homeless.† Getting a paycheck every two weeks does not mean a person cannot become homeless. Many would think only drug abuse and being poor are the reasons for homeless. There are many other ways to become homeless and for some people it becomes permanent. Many people that are homeless are single with kind, had/have welfare and do not have much work experience. The children are so youth that they develop emotional and mental problems. Drug and alcohol abuse become greater once people become homeless. Veterans become homeless because of substance abuse, disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or lack of benefits. There a re many different characteristics of people that are homeless. Not everyone go through the same endeavors to become homeless. There is three main reasons people become homeless: poverty, unemployment and lack of affordable houses. Poverty is when there is not enough money for support. If people do not have enough money for their needs, they will need to do cutbacks. Once they start cutting back, they get behind on bills and either get evicted or have to foreclose. They are plenty of homeless individuals that are still employed. Yet they are homeless because they do not make enough to be financially stable. Even though some people may be unemployment, they should still have government programs to be stable. For example, they programs like Welfare reform, food stamps, unemployment checks, and housing assistance. These are programs made in order to support those with no jobs. With the many cutbacks on the budget that the government has, people cannot be stable enough on their own. With rents continuing to rise, there will be a greater deficit on af fordable housing.
